(Washington, DC) - Rep. Gary L. Ackerman (D-L.I./Queens) cosponsored legislation today that would repeal the County Provision in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act reauthorization of 1994. By splitting New York City into five local education agencies, the provision not only reduced the total amount of Title I money going to NYC, but it also created a disparity whereby schools in certain boroughs received more money per Title I student that others did.
“As someone who has taught in New York City public schools and who has sent his children to them, I know how important it is that every child has equal access to a quality education,” said Ackerman.
The New York State Education Department has calculated that if this legislation is passed into law, NYC will receive an additional $500,000 in Title I funding.
