STATEMENT BY CONGRESSMAN GREGORY W. MEEKS

(WASHINGTON, DC)–Congressman Gregory W. Meeks issued the following statement on the resignation of Governor Eliot Spitzer today:

“Like New Yorkers throughout the state, I am shocked and profoundly saddened by the scandal of his own making that has engulfed Governor Eliot Spitzer. As more and more details emerged it became clear that he had irreparably and irredeemably undermined his once promising reform administration.

“Governor Spitzer has done the right thing in resigning office today, sparing the people of New York State and, above all, his family further embarrassment and humiliation. At this moment of personal crisis, I urge New Yorkers to respect the Spitzer family’s privacy. What they need from people of goodwill across the political, ideological, and partisan spectrum are prayers of support and expressions of sensitivity to help them get through this travail as best as possible.”
