New York City - Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn & Queens), a member of the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement today in response to the Mayor’s proposal for ferry service to the Rockaways:
“I commend the Mayor for adopting a proposal that many of us in Rockaway have been talking about for years. It is a matter of common sense that a water-bounded community like Rockaway should have access to timely, efficient and predictable commuter ferry service.
“It is finally a sign of progress that the Mayor has committed a subsidy of $3 to $6 million to ensure that this three year pilot program will cost the same or less than an express bus. It is a plan that is welcomed by the citizens of Rockaway and I look forward to being on the inaugural journey.”
After pledging to fight for Rockaway ferry service when he was first elected in 1998, Congressman Weiner has worked steadily to ensure that Rockaway commuters have a waterbourne alternative to the gridlock on the Belt Parkway, and slow service on the “A” train.
In August of 2004, Rep. Weiner secured $15 million in the federal transportation bill for the City to purchase three fast ferries to service Rockaway to Manhattan routes. Weiner also secured $1.7 million in federal funds for construction of the Riis Landing ferry dock, which could be used as the landing for Rockaway ferry service.
