NEW PROGRAM TO HELP IMMIGRANTS TRANSITION TO THE
WORKFORCE

Brooklyn, NY - Rep. Anthony Weiner (D- Brooklyn & Queens), a member of the House Subcommittee on Immigration, announced today that Kingsborough Community College (KCC) has been selected to receive $190,000 in federal funds through the 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Appropriations Bill which was sent to the Presidents desk for his signature. The new funding will be used for KCC's "New Americans Center", which will focus on easing immigrant's transition to the workforce, and provide immigrant support services for the community.
Founded in 1963, Kingsborough Community College is the only community college serving Brooklyn. KCC has a rich tradition of educating New York's recent immigrants, with students speaking 68 different languages hailing from 110 different countries.
The New American Center was created to assist immigrant's transition to their new communities and the workforce. The program will provide new immigrants with valuable language skills, job training, job placement services, support with documentation assistance and instill an understanding of civic responsibility.
"This grant pairs up the best that New York City has to offer – an eager immigrant workforce and a thriving community college," said Rep. Weiner. "I want to thank Senator Schumer and Senator Clinton for helping Brooklyn to proudly train the next generation of Big Apple ambassadors."
