Brooklyn, NY – Rep. Edolphus "Ed" Towns (NY-10) recently cosponsored H.Res.322, a bill “recognizing the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the modern State of Israel and reaffirming the bonds of close friendship and cooperation between the United States and Israel". The bill, now pending on the House floor, would ratify the House of Representatives' widespread support of Israel's pursuit of peace with its neighbors. “I remember with great excitement and pride when, on May 14, 1948, the State of Israel declared its independence and the United States was one of the first to recognize it, only eleven minutes later,” the Congressman said. “Today, we must continue to recognize Israel's success, its challenges, and the historic bond of friendship it shares with the United States.”
The Congressman continued, “From the horrors of Nazi Europe to the pogroms that swept across Arab lands, Jews have found refuge on Israel's shores. Much like its greatest friend, the United States, Israel is a land of immigrants, successfully integrating millions of people into Israeli society. These individuals have risen to the highest echelons of academia, science, medicine, and technology, an enduring testament to Israel's commitment to education and inclusiveness.”
The Congressman concluded, “Despite enormous challenges, the State of Israel has succeeded in developing a dynamic economy, an enviable, pluralistic democracy, and a wellspring of Jewish culture. For this reason, I have proudly cosponsored H.Res.322 and will continue to support legislation that reasserts our warm, cooperative relationship. Congratulations on sixty wonderful years and may Israel continue from strength to strength."
H.Res.322 passed the House of Representatives on April 23, 2008.
