Washington, DC - Congressman Edolphus Towns, 10th District New York, is elated over Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson's decision to reject the deal made by Clipper Equity, Inc. in the purchase of the Starrett City/Spring Creek Towers housing development.
"I purposely invited Secretary Jackson to Starrett City so that he could see first hand this housing jewel. It was that day the Secretary made a promise to me and the residents of Starrett City that he would carefully review the bid provided by Clipper Equity, Inc. and he is a man of his word," said Congressman Towns.
During Secretary Jackson's visit to Starrett City two weeks ago, he told the development's tenants that he "was committed to preserving affordable housing in New York and across the nation."
Prior to the Secretary's visit, Congressman Towns and Congressman Anthony Weiner stood together to announce if necessary they will call for Congressional hearings to investigate the bid of Clipper Equity, Inc. This still holds true for whatever entity purchases Starrett City that may have a lack of commitment in keeping the development affordable for its residents.
"The tenants of Starrett City can breathe a sigh of relief for now however, I still want them to know that I will continue to fight for them and their right to affordable housing," added Congressman Towns. ### |
