Washington, DC; May 12, 2006---Congressman Ed Towns (D - NY 10) announced today that the United States Army will confer upon Sergeant Rafael Gonzalez, a Korean War veteran, a Purple Heart for his injuries associated with his service in the Korean War.
The Purple Heart Award presentation is scheduled for Friday, May 19, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Hamilton, 113 Schum Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11252. Colonel Tracey Nicholson, Commander of the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Hamilton will present the award.
"I am deeply honored that I was able to facilitate the awarding of a Purple Heart to Mr. Gonzalez, a man who served his country with distinction," said Congressman Towns. "Mr. Gonzalez merits a Purple Heart because he was injured during his service in the Korean War; and on May 19, 2006, Mr. Gonzalez will finally receive the honor that he deserves."
Mr. Gonzalez served in the United States Army from October 30, 1950 to November 30, 1953; he received a head injury on June 30, 1952.
Mr. Gonzalez's family members, Congressman Ed Towns, Assemblyman Darryl C. Towns, Rick Weeks, the New York State Commander of the Military Order of Purple Hearts, and veterans, will attend the ceremony.
