| Washington, DC -- Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-11) released the following statement regarding the House’s unsuccessful attempt to override President Bush’s veto on the State Children’s Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP) Reauthorization bill. The measure failed by a vote of 273-156.
“The health care of America’s children is not a luxury. Health coverage for 10 million children from low-income homes is a basic necessity. The President and this Administration have once again used partisan rhetoric and tactics to justify leaving the most vulnerable in our society, our children, in the cold. The children who are eligible to receive SCHIP are ineligible for Medicaid, and have no health care benefit through their family’s employers. Providing health care for children is not a partisan issue. It’s an American issue. Our children deserve better.”
