Rep. Yvette D. Clarke Hosts Forum For Seniors and Persons With Disabilities

Uniting New York’s Leading Health Agencies and Brooklyn Residents Who May Qualify for Medicare, Medicaid, or SSI Benefits

August 19, 2009

Washington, DC -- Washington, DC. –Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke hosted a forum for seniors and persons with disabilities to provide them with access to New York City’s top government agencies. There they answered residents’ questions about access to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and much more.

“For more than 40 years, Medicare has offered critical health and financial stability for senior citizens, people with disabilities and those with end]stage renal disease. Medicare will provide coverage for over 45 million individuals this year.” stated Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke.
The forum also addressed the concerns of the residents about access to Social Security benefits.

“Sadly, there has been a significant backlog of Social Security disability applications,” added Rep. Yvette D. Clarke. “However, since coming to Congress in 2007, I have supported efforts by the Social Security Administration in its efforts to reduce its backlog, which have included hiring additional staff and instituting more compassionate allowances.”

Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke also announced that she will host two Town Hall meetings to address various Congressional HealthCare reform proposals. The first one will be held on Monday, August 31, 2009 at the Jewish Children’s Museum from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The second Town Hall meeting will be on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Flatbush-Tompkins Congressional Church from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
“Before I addressed congressional healthcare reform proposals, there is an urgent need to ensure that people understand how to access the benefits they have under the current system. I am committed to ensuring that my constituents receive vital information and are able to access the benefits they need,” concluded Congresswoman Clarke.
