Helping Other Makes Holidays Brighter for Everyone

Washington, D.C. -  This has been a difficult year for many in southern Ohio, and I’m overwhelmed to see how generous you’ve been to those having a tough time.

Bill Schinkal of the Salvation Army told the Cincinnati Enquirer that this year’s kettle campaign has brought in $500,000 – an amazing amount that proves how powerful a single dollar can be when so many neighbors are willing to reach into their pockets as they pass a bell-ringer.

As impressive as that six-figure number is, it’s $100,000 short  of the goal set by this worthy organization as it tries to meet the needs of the hungry and homeless in our community.

It’s a heart-wrenching sign of the times that the need is so great.

Our area’s unemployment rate isn’t quite as high as it was last Christmas – the latest report pegged it at 9.3 percent in October, down from 9.9 percent in December 2009 – but that number still is unacceptable. Jobs are returning, but too slowly.

In January, a new era will begin in Congress. I’m optimistic that we can find common ground on ways to improve the economy and promote job creation.

But even if we agree fast and act fast, it won’t be fast enough for those families who used to have a steady paycheck and now are struggling.

Clearly, you know that already because you are reaching out to help them with the canned goods you take to the food banks, the warm coats you donate and the coins you contribute to the kettles.

Please never think that those are little things.

They’re not little. They’re essential.

If you’d like to help during this season of giving, there are plenty of worthy organizations that would be glad to hear from you.  Or, you could just slip a check into a kettle.

I’m glad to be part of such a caring, giving community. I wish you and your family a joyous holiday season as we celebrate this holy time.
