Fire departments to receive federal grants

Washington, D.C. -  Several fire departments or associations in Clermont County, Pike County, Scioto County, and Adams County are among small agencies in Ohio that are to receive federal grants to upgrade equipment or help cover organizational or training costs, U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt announced Wednesday, Aug. 31. This year’s Ohio recipients include:

·         Clermont County: New Richmond Fire & Emergency Medical Services, $4,500; Wayne Township Fire & Rescue, $4,100.
·         Adams County: Winchester Community Fire District, $700; Adams County Fire Chiefs Association, $10,000.
·         Pike County: Pebble Township Volunteer Fire Department, $4,500; Benton Township Volunteer Fire Department, $1,750.
·         Scioto County: Otway Fire Department, $500; Rarden Volunteer Fire Department, $1,300; and Union Township Volunteer Fire Department, $4,100.
Money for the Volunteer Fire Assistance grants, administered by the Division of Forestry of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, is made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Schmidt is chairwoman of the Department of Agriculture’s Subcommittee on Nutrition and Horticulture.
The VFA grants provide federal matching funds of up to $10,000 to communities with populations of less than 10,000. The grants are used to upgrade equipment at existing fire departments or to help new departments with organizational, training and equipment costs.
In Ohio, 63 fire departments or associations are to receive the federal grants this year. More than 1,100 fire departments in rural areas of Ohio have received help through the VFA program since it was established in 1978.
