WASHINGTON, DC -- The University of Nevada at Las Vegas presented Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) with its Educational Pioneer Award for his contributions over the years to the GEAR UP and TRIO programs and for his dedicated efforts in support of education for at risk students.
“I have dedicated my professional life to ensuring that all of America’s young people have the opportunity to pursue a college education. Through mentorship and tutoring, GEAR UP and TRIO both provide the educational, social and emotional support children need to realize their full academic potential,” Fattah said. “Finally, after years of persuasion from legislators and academics, this Administration has agreed to continue funding GEAR UP. This is a testament to the high-quality programs offered by teachers and administrators that support those in the most need.”
GEAR UP was established in 1998 to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Congressman Fattah is the architect of the GEAR UP program which to date has served over 2 million students nationwide. |
