WASHINGTON, DC -- Inspired by the recent National Summit on America’s Children, convened by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and co-chaired by Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), the Pennsylvania legislator has introduced a bill to provide critical, accurate information as it relates to the well-being of our nation’s children.

H.R. 2477, “The State Child Well-Being Research Act of 2007,” establishes a national survey of specific child well-being indicators, including education, development, health and family status.  This data, statistically reliable at the state level, would identify state and federal programs that are achieving great results, as well as show those where changes need to be made.

“Our current sources of information are limited in their application,” said Congressman Fattah. “Accurately assessing the needs of children will enable policy makers to more precisely address those needs.  This legislation is a first step in that process.”

When enacted, “The State Child Well-Being Research Act of 2007” will collect the latest state-level information that will then be available to legislators, researchers, child advocates and families.  This information will inform policies to support the next generation of Americans.

A companion bill to H.R. 2477 has been introduced in the Senate by Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME).  On both sides of the aisle and in both Houses, the well-being of children has become a national priority.
