PHILADELPHIA, PA, June 18, 2007 – For the past decade at WRTI-FM and throughout a four-decade career as broadcaster and writer, Bob Perkins has been Philadelphia’s most recognizable host, chronicler and advocate of Jazz. Perkins’ program signature is to introduce great artists by promising Good Music – “B.P. with the G.M.”
Now Bob Perkins can add Congressional recognition to his long list of honors. Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) today presented Perkins with a copy of the tribute Fattah published last week in the Congressional Record, as well as a Proclamation to honor Perkins’ lifetime of achievement.
“Bob Perkins is the linchpin for the celebration of Jazz in Philadelphia,” Fattah said. “On behalf of all your grateful fans, thank you, Bob Perkins, native son and Philadelphia civic treasure.”
Rep. Fattah made the presentation at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz, S. Broad Street at Fitzwater, the city’s premier venue for Jazz performance, study and history, before a gathering that included Perkins’ wife Sheila, friends, admirers, and musicians. Poster-size stamps of Jazz greats including Thelonius Monk and Philadelphia’s John Coltrane lined the Clef Club Library walls.
Perkins, 73, a South Philadelphia native, has been a Jazz host, newscaster and writer of opinion pieces and jazz commentary throughout a 42 year career that has included work at WDAS, WHYY-FM and WRTI. He continues to broadcast on Temple University’s WRTI-FM Monday through Thursday evenings and Sunday morning.
