WASHINGTON, DC -- Child poverty persists as a social and economic concern in the United States. In 2006, 12.8 million children were considered poor under the official U.S. Census Bureau definition. Poverty affects children's life chances, their prospects of realizing their full potential, and their ability to successfully transition into adulthood. Our children deserve a fair chance at life. An opportunity to live healthy lives, to receive a quality education and to be free of the challenges that plague our nation’s poor. Our children are depending on us to help forge a brighter future for them. Through dialogue, we can design a plan that will help shape new policies for our nation’s youth.
