CONGRESSMAN FATTAH URGES NEWSPAPER OWNER, UNIONS TO CONSIDER CITY’S FUTURE IN TALKS

Congressman Chaka Fattah releases the following statement on negotiations between ownership and unionized employees at the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News:

“Philadelphia needs its newspapers. The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News are part of the city’s fabric, and most definitely a major part of its future. I congratulate Philadelphia Media Holdings for restoring local ownership and for pledging to keep two separate editorial voices alive and growing.

“Philadelphia Media Holdings must not lose this momentum. Ownership should not allow these current negotiations to harm Philadelphia’s reputation as a solid Labor community where our citizens support – and expect -- fair compensation and dignity in the workplace. I commend Governor Rendell and Congressman Brady for offering their good offices to help resolve these difficult issues, and I stand with them in this effort.

“The public life of Philadelphia is an ongoing conversation that depends on robust reporting and opinion. As the parties themselves work toward a resolution, they must acknowledge the third party at the table – the people of Philadelphia and across our region"
