English Comments on Democrats’ Budget for FY09

Washington, D.C.  -  In response to the Democratic Majority’s fiscal year 2009 federal budget proposal, U.S. Rep. Phil English (R-Pa.), Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Select Revenue Measures Subcommittee, released the following statement:

“At a time when America’s working families, seniors and entrepreneurs are struggling to make ends meet during this time of economic hardship, the Democratic Majority has failed to craft a sound budget that will meet the needs and priorities of the American people.

“By squeezing $683 billion in new revenue through tax increases, this budget fails to preserve the pro-growth policies that have a proven track record of growing the economy and reducing the deficit. This budget simply underwrites a saturnalia of spending propped up by the largest tax increase in American history, which will undoubtedly be borne by middle class America.

“Instead of holding millions of middle class tax payers hostage to record tax increases, Congress ought to embrace a budget compromise that will put our country on a course of solid growth, stronger job markets, restrained spending and falling deficits.”
