English, U.S. Coast Guard Help Local Residents
Gear Up for a Safe 2008 Boating Season

Announce Erie’s First Water Safety Expo

Erie, Pa. - As local residents gear up for the boating season this year, U.S. Rep. Phil English (R-Pa.) is joining forces with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) to enhance the safety of recreational boating through education and outreach.

Today, English joined U.S. Coast Guard Captain Scott J. Ferguson at a press event at the USCG Station Erie to highlight the importance of safe boating and to announce Erie’s first Annual Eastern Great Lakes Water Safety Expo which will take place on May 17, 2008.

“For years, local families and friends have joined together for boating activities and water sports on the Great Lakes,” English said.  “While recreational boating has been a time honored tradition for many Erie families, it’s important for local residents, regardless of age or experience, to stay up-to-date on the latest safety regulations and boating practices.”

During the press event, Captain Ferguson noted that each year lives are lost and local property is damaged as a direct result of boating accidents.  If boaters had practiced basic boating and water safety, however, many of these incidents could have easily been prevented. Water safety regulations range from knowing how to properly wear a life jacket, to carrying proper safety equipment to ensuring a vessel is properly checked.

“I want everyone to have a safe boating season, so my challenge to you is to wear your lifejacket,” Ferguson commented. “Remember that you are in charge.”

To kick-off this year’s National Safe Boating Week (May 17 – 23, 2008), the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Erie will host its first annual Eastern Great Lakes Water Safety Expo on Saturday, May 17th from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.  The event, organized by Captain Ferguson, is open to the public and will feature tours of the Coast Guard Station as well as free U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary recreational vessel safety inspections.

“The Water Safety Expo will help to educate local boaters and their families on the best practices of boating and water safety,” English said.  “I commend Capt. Ferguson and the U.S. Coast Guard for taking the initiative to organize what will undoubtedly be a successful event and prepare local boaters for a fun and safe boating season.”

“I would like to thank Congressman English for his leadership in making the season on the water safer for all of those involved.  Together, we can make a difference,” said Captain Ferguson.
