Shuster Announces Open Season for First Responder Grants

Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Grants Help Rural First Responders Acquire Technology, Communications Equipment

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster is pleased to announce the open season for applications to the Department of Homeland Security’s Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP).  The open application period will begin on April 25th and will expire on May 29, 2007.

CEDAP provides smaller communities and rural areas with the ability to purchase technology and equipment, together with training and technical assistance.  CEDAP provides resources such as communications interoperability equipment, information sharing technology, chemical detection devices, sensors, personal protective equipment, and rescue tools and training in how to use the equipment, devices, and technology.

Eligible applicants include law enforcement agencies, fire, and other emergency responders who demonstrate in their application that the equipment will be used to improve their ability and capacity to respond to a major critical incident or improve their ability to work with other first responders.

“This grant program is a great way for first responders in the 9th district to purchase high price technology that would otherwise be out of their reach,” Shuster said. “I encourage all of the district’s first responders to take advantage of this program.  I also want them to know that I am ready to assist them any way I can in the grant process.”

First responders looking for help in the CEDAP grant process are encouraged to contact Congressman Shuster’s district offices by calling his Toll-Free number: 1-800-854-3035.  For direct information on the grant program, applicants are encouraged to visit the Responder Knowledge Base (RKB) at www.rkb.mipt.org.  Applicants with questions about the program or the grant process are also encouraged to contact the Centralized Scheduling and Information Desk (CSID) at 1-800-368-6498 or via e-mail at askcsid@dhs.gov.
