Shuster Votes to Block Reckless Spending

Democrats’ Homeland Security Bill Long on Pork, Short on Border Enforcement

Washington, DC – Congressman Shuster released the following statement upon passage of the Democrats’ bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security:

"Today, House Democrats passed a Homeland Security spending bill without regard for America’s fiscal security. Instead of agreeing to the President’s increase for the department, the majority spent billions more than necessary.

Democrats already passed a budget with a $217 billion tax increase. That tax hike could jump to $400 billion if spending is not reigned in. Already in their first appropriation bill of the year, House Democrats have increased spending over 13 percent from last year. This could spell disaster for our nation’s economy and the tax relief that has created thousands of jobs and lowered the tax burden of millions of Americans.

In addition to outright fiscal irresponsibility, the Democrat’s Homeland Security bill ignores one of the most pressing issues facing the nation: immigration. Today’s bill fails to fully fund the "Secure Fence Act" passed in the last Congress to improve border security and build hundreds of miles of much needed fencing along our porous southern border.

The President has promised a veto on this bloated bill. Given the reckless spending and a lack of attention paid to our broken borders, I encourage him to reject this legislation."
