Washington, DC – On June 19th, Congressman Shuster awarded the Congressional Award Gold Medal to Carlisle native Brittany Weigle for her work in public service.
“Brittany set a great example for young people in Pennsylvania to follow,” Shuster said. “The hard work she put into completing the requirements of the Congressional Award program demonstrates her character and determination to succeed. I am sure that a bright future awaits Brittany no matter what path she chooses to follow.”
The Congressional Award, established by Congress in 1979, is a unique opportunity for young people between the ages of 14 and 23 to personally set and achieve goals designed to build character and foster community service, personal development, and citizenship. To compete for the award, young people must set goals over four categories, including: volunteer community service, personal development, physical fitness and exploration.
Brittany’s project covered all of the necessary requirements and won distinction for her dedication and creativity. For example, Brittany’s “Operation Pocket Pal” project collected pocket sized toys for our soldiers to give out to Iraqi children while on patrol. She also collected over 500 pounds of used clothing to donate to a Korean orphanage. For personal development, Brittany completed 23 hours of Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR training and put that experience to use in real world emergencies while in Korea. For physical fitness, Brittany set a goal of running a 12k race in under 70 minutes and spent nine days on a sheep and goat farm to complete her “exploration” challenge.
