| Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster today voiced his strong opposition to an attempt by House Democrats to remove a provision from a homeland security bill that would protect Americans who report suspicious terror-related activity from civil lawsuits.
“The Global War on Terror isn’t confined to a military battleground thousands of miles away. Terrorists continue to plot to bring the war to our doorstep. The recent overseas terrorist attacks on London and Glasgow, and the foiled Ft. Dix plot prove that our enemy is always looking for ways to attack us at home. Because of this, Americans must be encouraged to report suspicious behavior when they see it.
No American should ever be punished for doing their civic duty. They should never be discouraged from reporting terror-related activity for fear that they could be sued for doing so.
Removing just this sort of legal protection on a technicality plays politics with our safety and is a disservice to American patriotism and the work our police and intelligence services do every day to keep us safe.”
