The People Have Spoken: Amnesty Breaks Down in Senate

Washington, DC – Today, the Senate failed to invoke cloture on the Reid-Kennedy amnesty bill by a vote of 46-53; 14 votes shy from the 60 votes necessary to close debate and pass the bill. Congressman Bill Shuster released the following statement after the Senate vote:

“Today’s Senate vote was a perfect example of democracy in action. The American people overwhelmingly rejected the Reid-Kennedy amnesty plan and the Senate had no choice but to carry out the will of their constituents.

Amnesty is not the answer to our broken immigration system.  The Senate plan is too costly, too cumbersome, and too careless with our national security to win the support of the people. Instead of devoting time and money to a reform package as flawed as the Reid-Kennedy amnesty, Congress must focus on enforcing existing immigration laws, improving border security and identifying and deporting illegal and criminal aliens.”
