The Time for Politics is Over, Mr. President, Veto this Bill

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster released the following statement urging President Bush to veto the Democrat-crafted Iraq supplemental spending bill:

“Today, the Democrats delivered a politically driven “emergency” spending bill to President Bush that deserves his immediate veto.  Nothing less is adequate to send the message that this timetable laden, red tape bound declaration of defeat is not in the best interests of our nation as we face the threat of Islamic terrorism.  It’s time for Congress to put politics aside and fund our troops to succeed in their mission in Iraq.

Today it was reported that Al-Qaeda’s commander in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, was killed not by Iraqi police or Coalition troops, but at the hands of insurgents who have turned against Al-Qaeda’s reign of terror.

Infighting among insurgents along with promising results from General Petraeus’ Baghdad Security Plan indicates that we are gaining ground in the war against Islamic terrorism in Iraq.  Now is not the time to show weakness in our resolve.

Both our troops and our enemies are waiting for Congress’ reaction to the President’s decision tonight.  I hope he does the right thing and vetoes this bill.  When he does, Congress must do the responsible thing and put our soldiers first.  It’s time to give our forces in Iraq and Afghanistan the money and equipment they need to get the job done.”
