Congressman Platts to Chair Government Reform Subcommittee

Platts will chair Subcommittee on Government Efficiency and Financial Management

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Todd Platts (PA-19), a member of the House Committee on Government Reform, has been named as Chairman of the Government Reform Subcommittee on Government Efficiency and Financial Management.

"I am honored to have been selected for a leadership role on the Committee, and I eagerly accept this new responsibility," said Platts. "It is my intent for the Subcommittee to help identify opportunities to improve the fiscal management of the federal government. Tax dollars should be spent in the same manner as our personal funds - that is, in the most efficient and responsible manner possible."

As the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Efficiency and Financial Management, Congressman Platts is the presiding officer of the subcommittee and will be responsible for setting the subcommittee's legislative agenda. Members of legislative subcommittees hold hearings, mark up legislation, and report measures to their full committee for further action.

During subcommittee meetings, Congressman Platts will be responsible for preserving order, enforcing the rules, recognizing members to speak or offer motions, and putting questions to a vote. He will also be responsible for reporting measures approved by the subcommittee to the full Government Reform Committee for the full committee's consideration.

The primary jurisdiction of the Subcommittee on Government Efficiency and Financial Management is oversight responsibility for all matters relating to the financial management of executive departments and agencies, all matters relating to governmental accounting measures, all matters relating to the overall efficiency and management of government operations, and all matters relating to financial services and the nation's economic growth.

For example, the Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the management practices of all Departments and Agencies, the Executive Office of the President, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), the Federal Reserve System, the General Accounting Office, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Examples of specific legislative jurisdiction include the oversight of such acts as the Chief Financial Officers Act, the Debt Collection Improvement Act and the Government Performance and Results Act.

The Government Reform Committee is made up of 24 Members serving on seven subcommittees. Government Reform Committee Chairman Tom Davis said, "We've put together a talented, hard-working and dedicated lineup of subcommittee chairs, and I look forward to working with them to tackle our ambitious, wide-reaching agenda."

The following Members have been named to chair the six other Subcommittees of the Government Reform Committee: Congressman Chris Shays (R-CT), the committee's vice chairman, will serve as chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations; Congressman Dan Burton (R-IN), the committee's former chairman, will serve as chairman of the Subcommittee on Wellness and Human Rights; Congressman Mark Souder (R-IN) will serve as chairman of the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources; Congressman Doug Ose (R-CA) will serve as chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy Policy, Natural Resources and Regulatory Affairs; Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis (R-VA) will serve as chairman of the Subcommittee on the Civil Service and Agency Reorganization; and Congressman Adam Putnam (R-FL) will serve as chairman of the Subcommittee on Technology, Information Policy, Intergovernmental Relations and the Census.

In addition to serving on the Government Reform Committee, Congressman Platts serves on the Committee on Education and Workforce and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Congressman Platts was re-elected to the House Policy Committee by his fellow second-term House Republican Members as the Sophomore Class Representative to the Committee.
