When:   Wednesday, October 14, 2009 – 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

York, PA – Citizens looking to protect themselves and their families from unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent practices in the marketplace are invited to attend the forthcoming “Consumer Protection and Education” workshop hosted by U.S. Congressman Todd Platts (PA-19).  Congressman Platts will host the event to give consumers practical instructions to help them better identify scams, identity theft and other types of consumer fraud.

Education is the first line of defense against fraud and deception.  At this workshop, the Federal Trade Commission will give citizens the tools to better spot scams such as mortgage and credit card fraud, “free” federal grants and internet fraud.  The U.S. Census Bureau will discuss what residents can expect from the 2010 Census process.  The Pennsylvania State Police will inform consumers how to report identity theft when it happens and what to do if victimized by identity theft.  Finally, the Financial Stability Partnership will be on hand to discuss new tax breaks that can help families cope in this struggling economy.  The workshop will conclude with a question and answer session.

There is no admission for this event and all members of the public are encouraged to attend. Those interested in attending should contact Mary Weaver in Congressman Platts’ York office via e-mail at Mary.Weaver@mail.house.gov or via phone at 717-600-1919.
