House Approves Transportation Reauthorization Bill

Platts secures nearly $40 million for highway, transit and rail projects in the 19th District

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. House of Representatives has approved the Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (H.R. 3), which reauthorizes the federal surface transportation program through FY2009.

H.R. 3 provides $286 billion for highway construction, highway safety, transit, bridge, motor carrier, and surface transportation research programs over the next five years.  The current authorization, the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), expired in September 2003 and has been temporarily extended while Congress debated the proper level of funding.
Congressman Todd R. Platts (PA-19), a member of the House Transportation Committee, directly secured $36,128,102 in H.R. 3 to specifically address critical transportation infrastructure needs in Adams, Cumberland and York counties - more than twice the amount the 19th Congressional District received in TEA-21.  Congressman Platts also helped to secure an additional $3,300,000 for 19th District projects through coordination with Senators Arlen Specter and Rick Santorum.

"In seeking election to Congress in 2000, I pledged to do my utmost to ensure that the 19th District received its fair and necessary share of federal transportation dollars," Platts said.  "I am thus pleased to have secured nearly $40 million in funds for highway and other transportation-related projects in the 19th District."

Congressman Platts worked with state and local officials in each county within the 19th District to achieve consensus on the most critical transportation needs facing these communities.  The funding allocation for 19th District projects was determined on a per capita basis by county.
