Congressman Cohen's Vote on Iraq Supplemental Makes National News

Washington, DC -- In the Saturday, March 24, 2007 edition of The New York Times, in an article entitled "Democrats Unite Around an Iraq Plan of Their Own" Congressman Steve Cohen's Iraq Supplemental vote was explained.

The need for realism and hard choices became prevailing themes in the endless round of meetings and caucuses this week. Many liberals in the House said that, in the end, they could not make the perfect the enemy of the good, an argument advanced by Representative Steve Cohen, a freshman Democrat from Memphis, in a caucus this week. He wanted to hold out for a better bill, he told his fellow Democrats, but realized, as he put it, "That’s akin to what the Ralph Nader people felt in 2000, and that vote gave us George Bush."

Following his vote, Congressman Cohen noted, "While I firmly believe we should never have been in Iraq in the first place, we are there now and I feel strongly that we need to have a real plan that supports our troops and our veterans and begins the process of bringing them home.  My vote is intended to get the U.S. out of Iraq."
