Washington D.C.- Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, today issued the following statement after House Democrats blocked Republican efforts to begin an immediate earmark moratorium and create a select committee to develop ways to permanently change the broken spending process in Congress. The Republican Study Committee has led the effort to reform earmarks.
“Democrats promised reform and they have not delivered. They promised transparency and they have not delivered. They promised accountability and they have not delivered. They promised to cut earmarks in half, and they have not delivered. Sadly, their record is about as good as their word.
“The Speaker of the House has told reporters that she would personally get rid of all earmarks if given the choice, yet remains among the top recipients of pork. The Majority Leader’s office falsely claims to have cut the number of earmarks in half, yet the truth is that Congress approved the 2nd most earmarks in American history under their watch. In fact, Democrats increased total spending on earmarks from the previous year. If that is how Democrats define reform, it’s no wonder their approval ratings are lower than the drinking age.
“While Democrats might be satisfied with business as usual in Washington, the American people are not. At a time when families across America are tightening their belts, it is an utter embarrassment for some in Congress to continue to waste taxpayer money on monuments to themselves, lobster institutes, and hippie museums. Republicans in Congress will show taxpayers and families across America that we are dramatically different from Democrats who continue to defend the status quo.”
