Hensarling Slams Democrat Leadership for Silencing Majority of Congress
Calls on rank and file Democrats to end silence, demand a vote – allow voices to be heard

Washington D.C.- Congressman Jeb Hensarling (TX-05), Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, today called on Democrat leaders to allow the majority of Congress to vote on a substantive measure on our troops and Iraq.  Despite the fact that at least 70 Democrats and a majority of House Republicans want to debate and vote on funding our troops, the Democrat Leadership continues to block the majority of Congress.  Hensarling issued the following statement:

“The Democrat Leadership is not just muting Republicans; they are silencing their own members and their own constituents, and for what?  For months, Democrats have complained about the status quo, and now they are supporting a resolution that continues it.  I have news for them, they are not sending a message to the President; they are sending a message to our troops, our constituents, our allies, and our enemies.

“If they wanted to send a message to the President, the Democrat leadership would have a substantive debate on how Congress should best carry out its Constitutional responsibility regarding the reinforcement and realignment of U.S. troops.   Instead, they are stifling the voices of their own Democrat members who want to stop funding a mission that they consider to be a mistake and those on our side who believe that it is essential that America succeed in Iraq.

“Though I sympathize with those members being muted by their own leadership, my greatest concern rests with the men and women of our armed forces and their families.  As military reinforcements arrive ready for combat in Iraq, the Democrat leadership continues to waste time with a nonbinding resolution.  They believe that the reinforcement and realignment of our troops in Iraq will not work, yet they are refusing to stop young Americans from being deployed there.

“How could House Democrats be so thoughtless as to send young men and women on a mission that they claim is a mistake with no chance of success?  If they believe that and do nothing about it, shame on them.”
