Washington D.C.- The Republican Study Committee (RSC) welcomed the announcement of the 2006 National Taxpayers Union (NTU) ratings, the only of its kind to consider every roll call vote affecting tax, spending, and regulatory issues. NTU ratings are widely considered to be the most comprehensive measurement of each lawmaker’s stance on fiscal policy.
RSC Member Jeff Flake (R-AZ) achieved the highest score in the House of Representatives (92 percent) and RSC Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) had the next highest total (86 percent). The RSC officers, consisting of Congressman John Campbell (R-CA), Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Congressman Scott Garrett (R-NJ) and Congressman Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) had an average score of 78 percent. Each received an “A” grade and “Taxpayer’s Friend” awards.
“It is time for Washington to show American taxpayers the accountability that they deserve. The federal government cannot be all things to all people, but it can be more responsible, less wasteful, and more rational to the people that it serves,” said Hensarling. “The RSC is dedicated to providing American taxpayers greater accountability in Washington, and within the next two weeks we will be unveiling a national, pro-taxpayer platform that does just that."
Though the average NTU pro-taxpayer score in the House of Representatives was 39 percent (D grade), current RSC Members (who served in Congress during 2006) averaged a 67 percent (B+) grade. In total, 27 current RSC members achieved an “A” Grade.
“Once again, Members of the Republican Study Committee led the way in protecting the taxpayer and fighting for fairness in the tax code,” said Kristina Rasmussen, Senior Government Affairs Manager for the NTU.
The 350,000-member NTU is a non-partisan citizen organization working for lower taxes, less wasteful spending, and accountability at all levels of government. The 2006 ratings are available online at http://www.ntu.org/misc_items/rating/VS_2006.pdf
