Washington D.C.- Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, today issued the following statement after the overwhelming majority of the Republican Conference voted for the Republican Budget alternative that would balance the budget by 2012 without raising taxes and institute one year earmark moratorium in order to overhaul the current system:
“I am extremely pleased that today the overwhelming majority of Republicans voted to enact a one year earmark moratorium and to use funds reserved for earmarks to preserve the child tax credit – which Democrats want to take away – for all families. Though they voted for the largest tax increase in history, only 4 Democrats voted for a Republican budget that would save taxpayers $15 billion that would have been used on earmarks.
“By voting to end an earmark process that has been corrupted and is in desperate need of reform, House Republicans today underscored a clear difference with Democrats. As Democrats voted to keep alive an earmark system that most Americans have rightfully concluded represents the victory of special interests over the national interest and secrecy over transparency, Republicans drew a bold line in the sand. We are the party of reform, we are the party that understands that Washington is broken, and we are the party that will not sit idly by as Democrats continue to defend the status quo.
“Too often under the Democrat watch, taxpayers see campaign donations going in one end of Capitol Hill and earmarks coming out of the other. Too often, they have seen Democrats taking more out of their paycheck so some Congressman can keep his. I would like to recognize Republican Leader John Boehner and other Members of the Republican leadership for saying ‘enough is enough’ and joining the movement to totally overhaul a broken earmark system. I would also like to highlight the remarkable effort of Congressman Paul Ryan for writing a taxpayer friendly budget that acknowledges that the earmark system is broken and in desperate need of reform.
