Hensarling Statement on Flake Earmark Amendment

Washington D.C.- Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, today issued the following statement after an amendment to the Beach Protection Act, offered by Congressman Jeff Flake (R-AZ), passed the House on the strength of Republican support.  Flake’s amendment prohibited H.R. 2537’s $40 million annual authorization from being used to fund earmarks.

“The Flake amendment is the latest example of Democrats’ addiction to earmarks and continued refusal to reform the broken spending process.  Even when forced to vote on the lowest hurdle for earmark reform – an amendment to prevent future wasteful earmarks from being attached to a program that had never been open to them before – Democrats still couldn’t overcome their addition to pork.

“While over 90 percent of Republicans supported the amendment preventing wasteful earmarks, 88 percent of those voting ‘no’ were Democrats.  Taxpayers take note, for each ‘no’ vote signifies a ‘yes’ vote for porking up future authorizations with wasteful earmarks.”
