Hensarling Lambastes Democrat Efforts to Raise Taxes

Putting the next election over the next generation: Democrat budget ignores entitlement reform, lacks spending control, imposes largest tax increase in history on American families

Washington D.C.- Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, issued the following statement as the House prepared to consider S. Con. Res. 21, the Democrat FY '08 Budget Resolution Conference Report –which lacks any form of spending control, ignores entitlement reform and sanctions the largest tax increase in American history:

"Today, Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats ignored the unsustainable growth of entitlement programs and imposed the largest tax increase in American history at the peril of the next generation of Americans. Though Democrats campaign as the stewards of fiscal responsibility, they spend like teenagers at the mall with daddy’s credit card.

"It is a dereliction of duty for members of Congress to continue to ignore the unsustainable growth of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. The $40 trillion unfunded liability of the programs amounts to $440,000 for every American family, meaning that a child born today in America automatically inherits a full mortgage as she takes her first breath. Prioritizing the next election over the next generation in such a way is reckless.

"The Democrats promise countless new programs, no tax increases, no spending control and the most expensive budget in the history of our country – something has to give. The Democrat bill has a faux trigger that stipulates if somehow you can stop the majority from spending your money, you can get some of it back. Let’s be honest, there is a better chance of an Elvis comeback tour than the Democrats not spending taxpayer money."
