FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Brian Thomas, (202) 225-6605 WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) released the following statement on the introduction of the Employee Free Choice Act. “With the introduction of the Employee Free Choice Act, a worker’s right to a secret ballot in union organizing elections is in serious jeopardy. If this bill passes, workers will likely be subjected to unwelcome coercion by both unions and employers to sign or not sign a card. Workplace privacy will be unnecessarily compromised by making the personal views of workers on unionizing known to their co-workers, their employers, and union officials, and thus subjecting workers to retribution. All workers deserve the right – which they now have – to decide whether or not to unionize through secret ballot without fear of reprisal. “When we should be focused on job creation and stimulating the economy, supporters of this bill have chosen to champion a piece of legislation which will actually impede our nation’s economic recovery and long-term growth. The right to a secret ballot is a hallmark of our democracy. As such, I have joined as an original co-sponsor of H.R. 1176 the Secret Ballot Protection Act which will ensure the right of employees to a secret ballot election. I remain committed to continuing my strong record of supporting pro-growth policies and protecting workers’ rights.” ### |
