Press Release
Rep. Marchant Honors WWII Veteran from Cedar Hill
April 20, 2009

CEDAR HILL, TX – U.S. Representative Kenny Marchant honored Cedar Hill resident James Brown last week at City Hall for his distinguished military service.  Mr. Brown, a Navy veteran who served in World War II and the Korean War, was presented overdue medals and awards for his service.

James Brown, 85, was presented his awards by Rep. Marchant in front of the Cedar Hill City Council and audience members.  Mr. Brown received several medals including: the World War II Victory Medal; Distinguished Flying Cross; Air Medal with two gold stars; China Service Medal; United Nations Service Medal; Combat Action Ribbon; Republic of Korea War Service Medal; and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation among others.

Mr. Brown served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1947, and in the Navy Reserves from 1947 until 1968.  He served as a night fighter pilot in the Pacific during WWII and also in the Korean War.  In the Reserves, Mr. Brown was a Commanding Officer of a Jet Attack Squadron.  He has not flown a plane as a pilot since he retired and now proudly calls his home Cedar Hill.

Just a week after Mr. Brown was honored in Cedar Hill, he participated in a Veterans History Project on April 20 at Rep. Marchant’s district office in Irving.  The Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center (Library of Congress) collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.

If you or someone you know has served in the military and not received their earned medals, and/or would like to participate in the Veterans History Project, please contact John Hayes of Congressman Marchant’s office at (972)-556-0162.
