Press Release
Hundreds attend town hall with Marchant
August 13, 2009

FARMERS BRANCH - U.S. Rep. Kenny Marchant (TX-24) held a town hall on August 12 for constituents of the 24th district in Farmers Branch.

The town hall started at 7:00 p.m. at the senior center.  After a brief introduction, Marchant took questions for two hours from the audience of over three-hundred.  The meeting room was at full capacity with standing room only.

Constituents asked Marchant questions over a variety of issues, but the majority of the discussion was in regard to health care.

Marchant, who is against the government-run health care proposal, said that two of his concerns about the bill are its vague language and lack of specific details to pay for the program.  “Almost anybody can get a different interpretation [of the bill]…I believe it is the job of the lawmakers to write the law clear and specific,” said Marchant.

The questions asked by constituents represented several interpretations of the bill.  Many were concerned about the cost structure and how it would impact their personal health care policies and taxes.  Others voiced concerns about the need to expand coverage to those who find it difficult to find affordable coverage.

Marchant stressed that attention should be focused on finding affordable coverage for those who are unable to obtain health care rather than mandate a government-run program for everyone.  Marchant added this should be one of the top priorities and that such a proposal would be financially sustainable and keep the government away from over reaching its powers.

Many sides of the argument were heard at the town hall.  Marchant emphasized that no matter where one stands on the bill, he hopes the legislative process of the bill will be conducted in a “bipartisan, transparent, and deliberative manner” so all Americans can be informed and have their voices heard.

The event marked one of many constituent meetings in which Marchant has participated during the month of August.
