Press Release
Marchant Statement on FY ’09 Omnibus Appropriations Bill
February 26, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) released the following statement regarding the unveiling on the $400 billion Omnibus Appropriations Bill.

“The American people have exercised tremendous restraint with their own budgets as they weather the economic climate we are now in. Unfortunately, instead of following the example of millions of American families by making tough choices and tightening its belt, the Democratic Leadership has put forth yet another bloated bill with thousands of wasteful earmarks and billions of dollars in non-emergency spending. And, like the many of the ‘emergency’ spending bills being rammed though Congress these days, I expect that scare tactics will be used to obscure the blatant and inexcusable waste this bill contains.

“This bill flies in the face of the ‘Fiscal Responsibility’ Summit held at the White House two days ago and comes as the President has promised to cut the budget deficit in half by 2012. Since it appears the Democrat appropriators have no intentions of reigning in profligate spending, the American people can only surmise that a massive tax increase is looming on the horizon.

“In this time of ballooning deficits, every last dollar we save matters. I hope Speaker Pelosi will reconsider many of the spending provisions in this bill. If we fail to come together to forge a fiscally responsible path, Americans will be digging out from under the debt for generations to come.”
