Press Release
Congressman Marchant Releases Statement on Steroids Investigation
February 14, 2008

Washington, DC -- I agree that the original hearings held by then Chairman Tom Davis were justified, and I agree with the goals of the hearings. I also agreed that Chairman Waxman had justifiable rights to hold the second round of hearings and agreed with his initial goals.

Senator Mitchell's report was a public service to the American public and the fans of Major League Baseball.

It is my belief that if there are disagreements on the facts in the report that involve criminal activity the committee should not act as a court and the committee members as jurors. It is admirable that Mr. Clemens wants to publically refute the charges made against him, but I do not believe this is the place to do that. These charges should be evaluated by prosecutors, and a decision should be made by the local authorities as to whether crimes were committed and indictments handed down if appropriate.
