FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Brian Thomas WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) released the following statement regarding his vote opposing the massive economic “stimulus” package passed the House. “Just a day after President Obama spoke about coming together to solve this nation’s economic problems, Speaker Pelosi unveiled a bill that no person seriously desiring to stimulate our economy could have come up with. “I’m not sure that this bill, nearly 70% of which the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office admitted would not be implemented until 2011 at the earliest, can be characterized as stimulus. “Rather than crafting a bill with pro-growth, job-creating tax cuts for America’s families and small businesses, Speaker Pelosi rammed through a bill with more special interest ornaments than the White House Christmas tree. Not only will the bill not stimulate the economy and create the jobs millions of Americans need, it imposes a crushing debt burden on generations of Americans because of the fiscal irresponsibility this bill represents. “We could have allowed small businesses to retain workers and grow their businesses through bold, targeted tax relief. Instead, Speaker Pelosi chose the route of pork barrel and temporary cash transfers which will do nothing to help the neediest Americans get a job. I believe our small businesses hold the key to unlocking lasting economic growth. “The astonishing lack of accountability and oversight in this bill will invite the kind of waste, fraud, and abuse the likes of which was seen in the financial bailout bill. If we were serious about stimulating the economy and cutting waste, fraud, and abuse, we should have passed the Republican bill which entrusts the American people with the decision of how best to spend, save, or invest their own money.”
