Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson on Friday announced the winners of the 26th Annual Congressional High School Art Competition. Created in 1982, the nationwide art competition has spotlighted the talents of thousands of young artists for almost three decades.
Eduardo Zarazua of Skyline High School received first place, Zenia Curiel of Bishop Dunne Catholic High School received second place and MarQuilla Kilson of Townview High School received third place. Zarazua’s abstract painting, "A Dark Nature," will be displayed along a highly-visited corridor that leads to the U.S. Capitol Building, side-by-side with winning pieces of art representing all 435 Congressional districts.
"My district is home to extremely talented young artists, and I appreciate the time and effort that all of the students put into their submissions," Congresswoman Johnson said. "I congratulate Eduardo, Zenia and MarQuilla and wish them the best of luck in their future artistic endeavors."
As first-prize winner, Zarazua will receive a $200 savings bond from Time Warner and three round-trip tickets from Southwest Airlines, to fly from Dallas to Washington, D.C. Curiel, who won second place for her textiles work, "FIVE," and Kilson, who won third place for her acrylic on canvass board piece, "Awareness," will each receive $100 savings bonds from Time Warner.
The Congressional Art Competition was open to all high school students. Since 1982, over 650,000 high school students have been involved in the competition, and the works of thousands of young American artists have been showcased in a passageway to the Capitol.
