Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson today co-hosted a lunch briefing titled "Maternal Mortality: How Can We Save Women’s Lives?" in the Cannon House Office Building, in cooperation with CARE USA, PATH, the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood and Women’s Policy, Inc. CARE USA President and CEO Helene Gayle, MD, MPH; White Ribbon Alliance India National Coordinator Aparajita Gogoi, PhD; and PATH Prevention of Postpartum Hemorrhage Initiative Project Director Deborah Armbruster, CNM, MPH, FACNM spoke about maternal deaths around the world and efforts to reduce them.
Congresswoman Johnson focused her remarks on the global HIV/AIDS epidemic.
"As a registered nurse, I fully understand that the AIDS epidemic is one of the leading global threats that face us today," Congresswoman Johnson said. "We must focus our efforts on fighting this epidemic. I strongly believe in providing health education to women in the developing world, as this will assist in reducing HIV transmission rates. A society that fails to educate its women is ultimately wasting fifty percent of its most precious resource.
"We also need to break the cycle of mother-to-child HIV transmission," Congresswoman Johnson continued. "Approximately 650,000 children were newly infected with HIV last year. That’s close to 1,800 children infected every day."
Congresswoman Johnson co-hosted the briefing with Reps. Lois Capps, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Jan Schakowsky, Mary Fallin, Mary Bono Mack, Hilda Solis, Ileana Ros-Lehtenin, Tammy Baldwin, Shelley Moore Capito and Nita Lowey. Congresswoman Johnson serves as the Co-Chair of the International Task Force of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues with Congresswoman Bono Mack.
