Washington, DC - Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and Paul Quinn College will host a one-day “National Science Foundation Day” workshop at the Dallas-based College next week. The workshop, which will be held Tuesday, April 6th, will help officials and administrators at the nation’s historically black colleges and university and minority serving institutions to successfully navigate their way through the grant application process at the National Science Foundation (NSF).
“Many historically black colleges and universities are not fully tapping into the vast array of grants offered by the National Science Foundation,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “This NSF grants workshop will empower minority serving institutions and historically black colleges and universities to become more competitive in this arena by developing strategies for gaining access to NSF’s core research programs.”
“The National Science Foundation underwrites more than half of the research conducted at the nation’s colleges and universities,” Rep. Johnson noted. “What’s more, the NSF provides almost 30 percent of the total federal support for science and mathematics education. Black colleges can ill afford to lose ground in pursuing federal resources for science and technology.”
Participants attending the seminar will receive an overview of the NSF’s major areas of research activity, including mathematical and physical sciences, geosciences, education and human resources, and biological sciences. Scientists and researchers who have built a successful relationship with NSF over the years will share their insights on networking. The NSF is charged with keeping the nation’s science and engineering enterprise healthy, dynamic, diverse, and relevant as well as with advancing science, mathematics, engineering, and technology education from pre-K through postdoctoral.
