CONGRESSWOMAN EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON HOSTS 13TH ANNUAL PRAYER BREAKFAST

Congresswoman Johnson and guests discuss environmental issues at event

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson held her 13th Annual Prayer Breakfast the morning of Friday, March 28, at the Cityplace Conference Center in Dallas, TX. The keynote speakers, businessman Zad Roumaya and Dallas Councilwoman Linda Koop, addressed the breakfast’s theme, "Reaping What You Sow: What it Means to Think Green in ’08 and Beyond." More than 70 of the Congresswoman’s constituents were in attendance at the breakfast.

Contemporary gospel singer Rick Bernard James of Carrollton, TX, performed two songs at the breakfast, and Rev. Claude Maples of Romine Christian Church served as the event’s master of ceremonies. Other participants included Rev. Wade Charles Davis of Munger Ave. Baptist Church, Rev. A.K. Haynes of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, Dr. Joseph Clifford of First Presbyterian Church, Rev. Michael Hubbard of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, Father John Alfonsa of St. Jude Chapel, Rev. Van Carl Williams of Cedar Crest Cathedral CME Church, Rev. Daryl Carter of Carver Heights Baptist Church and Dr. David Henderson of Greater Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

"As a former nurse, I am well aware of the very serious consequences that environmental problems can have on people’s health, particularly on the health of those among us who are most vulnerable—the children, the elderly and the poor," Congresswoman Johnson said during her greetings. "And as a mother and a grandmother, I am strongly committed to being a good steward of the environment, and to doing what I can to ensure that the environment remains a priority at the federal level. But some of the most exciting progress on improving our earth is taking place at the local level. Our speakers today know that environmental can mean affordable, engaged in the community, and easy. The show us that, working together, we can make the world a cleaner and safer place."

In his keynote address, Dr. Roumaya discussed his company, Change Chamber Development, and its new project, the Buzz Lofts, Dallas’ first "green" condominiums. He stressed the importance of de-mythologizing the concept of "green" and encouraged people to think in terms of "sustainable living." Councilwoman Koop, in her keynote remarks, outlined the environmentally-friendly initiatives that the city of Dallas is undertaking, including investing in wind energy and offering rebates for the purchase of low-flow toilets.

Congresswoman Johnson’s prayer breakfast capped a two-week visit to her Congressional district, which she spent meeting with her constituents.
