CONGRESSWOMAN EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON DENOUNCES PRESIDENT'S VETO OF CRITICAL HEALTH, EDUCATION, NURSING PRIORITIES

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson today condemned President Bush's veto of the 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services and Education spending bill, eliminating crucial funding for North Texas medical facilities and educational programs. The legislation would have increased vital funding for local community colleges, higher education institutions and $16.46 billion in federal student financial aid. As well, the legislation impacted spending for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Institute on Aging, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Baylor Research Institute, and priority nurse training facilities and seniors programs.

"The President’s choice to veto today’s Labor, Health and Education appropriations bill means that critical health care, research and education activities across the nation will go flat-funded until such a bill is passed. It will take time for Congress to go back to the drawing board and re-work the numbers. It would have been much better for the President to engage with Congress in a dialogue so that we can come to a mutual agreement. American citizens will be negatively impacted as a result of the stubborn maneuver, " Congresswoman Johnson said.
