Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson announced today an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) - Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Program Award through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the Hutchins Fire Rescue for $948,825.
Congresswoman Johnson was very active in helping establish and fund the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which helps local fire departments in North Texas and across the country buy equipment and provide adequate training. The goal of the grant program is to enhance the local fire departments’ abilities to comply with staffing, response and operational standards.
"The Fire Grant Program provides an important service to local fire departments here in Hutchins and throughout the country," said Congresswoman Johnson. "Our volunteer and career firefighters sacrifice a great deal to protect our communities and it is our duty to provide them with the equipment and training they need to keep their departments running safely and efficiently."
The SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) Grant was created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations in order to help them increase the number of trained, “front-line” firefighters available in their communities.
