CONGRESSWOMAN JOHNSON INVITES THE RESIDENTS OF THE 30th DISTRICT TO CELEBRATE AMERICA RECYCLES DAY

Promotes eco-friendly practices and the environmental benefits of using recycled materials

Washington, D.C. - In celebration of the 10th anniversary of America Recycles Day, Congresswoman Johnson encouraged all Americans to make smart recycling and environmentally conscious decisions. American Recycles Day's mission is to increase the purchase of recycled content materials and recycling efforts throughout the country.

Congresswoman Johnson’s two Congressional offices in Washington, D.C., and Dallas, Texas, utilize environment-friendly office practices. These include using only recycled paper for correspondence, energy efficient light bulbs, recycling off all paper, plastic and aluminum products, an electronic fax system to reduce paper waste, electronic district newsletters, reusable cups, and the use of public transportation for staff commuting to work.

"Dallas and many other urban areas in Texas are in desperate need of better environment policies. It is my hope that Dallas residents will recycle, re-use, and walk or take public transportation whenever they can. I encourage them to contact their State representatives to ask the State of Texas to stop relaxing the rules to accommodate older businesses that pollute the environment. I’m making it personal – my own offices are leading the way in "green" practices," Congresswoman Johnson remarked.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), recycling one ton of mixed recyclables avoids emissions equivalent to 2.8 tons of carbon dioxide.  Statistics from Novelis, the world's largest aluminum-rolled products company, highlight that a 50 percent respective increase of the amount of cans, bottles, newsprint and corrugated packaging currently recycled would result in new energy savings of 58 fewer megatons of greenhouse-gas emissions into our atmosphere. This is equivalent to 44 percent of all the greenhouse-gas emissions from U.S. landfills.
