Weed and Seed Program Receives 06 Funding

(Washington, DC, April 12, 2006) — Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen is pleased to announce that the Virgin Islands Housing Authority has received their 2006 Weed and Seed funding in the amount of $175,000.

The Weed and Seed project in St. Thomas, will focus on developing a comprehensive community-wide strategy designed to reduce violent crime. The community policing goals include creating community and parenting awareness of community policing and various prevention programs. Prevention, intervention, and treatment goals include reducing substance abuse and establishing programs to combat public health and social problems.

The St. Thomas Weed and Seed site received Official recognition in June 2004. This was the first award to implement their strategy. The designated area includes the Estate Bovoni and the Tutu Hi-Rise Housing communities.
