Delegate applauds Pelosi, Hoyer, Clyburn Victories

(Washington, DC, November 16, 2006) — The Democratic Caucus today voted to nominate Nancy Pelosi (CA-08), as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives, which will make her the first female Speaker of the House in history. Also nominated was Steny Hoyer (MD-05) for Majority Leader and James Clyburn (SC-06) for Majority Whip. Rahm Emanuel, (IL-05) who led the DCCC to the Majority, was elected the new Democratic Caucus chair succeeding Clyburn. The final votes for Speaker, Whip and Majority Leader are done by the whole House and will take place January 4, 2007.

"I am very proud to see Nancy, who is a friend and has always looked out for me ascend to this high post and break yet another glass ceiling. I am also especially proud of my good friend and former Congressional Black Caucus chair, Jim Clyburn who will assume the important post of Whip." the Delegate said.

The race between Steny Hoyer and John Murtha (PA-12) was a hotly contested one that the pundit said was a test of Nancy's leadership. "I supported Steny from the beginning and throughout, despite a lot of pressure to change my commitment to him. I am glad he won and look forward to working with Murtha in other capacities. But Nancy's leadership is unchallenged. She is a strong and visonary leader and I look forward to working with her and supporting her in any way I can." Delegate Christensen added.

“We have a great agenda and great leadership. I expect the 110th Congress to be a good one for the VI.” The Delegate concluded.
