Christensen To Serve As Assistant Whip
In New Democratic Majority

(St.Croix, VI. January 3, 2007) — Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen has been asked to serve as Assistant Whip in the New Democratic Majority of the 110th Congress by Majority Whip-elect Jim Clyburn.  In a letter to Christensen, Clyburn said that his goals are to work relentlessly to foster unity among the Democratic Caucus, establish bi-partisan coalitions and to keep the promises made to the American people.

“Our Caucus cannot accomplish these tasks alone, and I need your help in a very special way,” he wrote. “I am therefore asking you to serve as an Assistant Whip in the Majority Whip operation for the 110th Congress.”

The job of the whips is to maintain communication between the leadership of the party and its members, marshal support for party positions on the floor, count votes on key legislation and persuade wavering Members to vote for party positions.

Assistant Whips will be responsible for Member level whipping of approximately 5 to 7 Members of the Caucus from their respective regions.  Assistant Whips will be utilized when the responses to the Regional Whips indicate that there is not a clear and comfortable majority in support of the Caucus’s position.

“I am honored to have been asked by leadership to serve as an Assistant Whip,” Christensen said.  “It is an honor not only for me, but for the people of the Virgin Islands, whom I serve,” Delegate Christensen said.
